What causes joint inflammation and pain?

The joints in the human body are divided into three main categories – fibrous joints, cartilagenous joints and synovial joints. Fibrous joints are the immovable joints present in the skull. Cartilagenous joints are the partially moveable joints present between the vertebrae in the spine. The freely movable joints in the body are known as synovial joints. Arthritis, characterized by inflammation and pain in the joints, occurs in the synovial joints.
The ends of the two bones in the synovial joint are encased in a synovial membrane, which produces the synovial fluid. The fluid acts as a lubricating agent, reducing friction between the bone ends as we move the joints. Friction between the bone ends is further reduced by the cartilage, which acts as a cushion.
Inflammation and pain in the joints might be induced by several factors. Wear and tear of the cartilage leads to osteoarthritis. The bone surface becomes irregular, causing intense pain while moving the affected joints. Osteoarthritis usually affects the knee and the hip joints.
In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune cells target the synovial membrane, resulting in inflammation of the synovial membrane. The joints in the hands and feet are the common sites of this autoimmune disease. Prolonged swelling, gradually damages the joint tissues, worsening the problem overtime. Unlike osteoarthritis that affects only elderly people, rheumatoid arthritis usually occurs at a young age. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis occurs in children and teens.
Like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus arthritis too is another autoimmune disorder. It usually affects the knees, wrists and joints in the hands.
Accumulation of urate crystals in the joint causes gouty arthritis. It usually affects the big toe and the knee. Elevated uric acid level in the blood is believed to be responsible for this condition. Pseudogout arthritis is a rare condition that occurs owing to accumulation of calcium in the joint.
Acute arthritis might be triggered by infections. Accumulation of blood in the joints due to bleeding causes hemorrhagic arthritis in people with genetic disorders such as hemophilia or sickle cell anemia.

Ankylosing spondylitis affects the spine. It causes chronic inflammation in the vertebral joints and ligaments, leading to stiffness and pain in the spine
